Prof. Yanghui Kang’s group (Ecosystem Intelligence Lab<https://www.eco-intelli.org/>) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, starting in Fall 2027.

The research will focus on AI-driven decision support for sustainable agriculture, integrating satellite remote sensing, process-based ecosystem models, and machine learning to monitor, simulate, and predict agroecosystem dynamics. The successful candidate will develop AI-enabled decision support tools to evaluate and optimize agricultural management practices under varying climate conditions. This research aims to advance our understanding of agroecosystem processes and management responses while supporting sustainable and resilient agriculture. The student will have opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary research and collaborate with leading research groups.

Qualifications:

  *   Strong interest in agroecosystems, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence, with motivation for independent research.
  *   Background in ecology or agricultural sciences, or a willingness to learn relevant domain knowledge.
  *   Experience with machine learning and an interest in further developing and applying these methods.
  *   Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., agricultural/environmental engineering, remote sensing, ecology, geography, computer science, data science)
  *   Strong programming and quantitative skills
